Australian buyers are showing real and growing interest in mid-sized New Zealand businesses, seeing them as a foothold for Tasman expansion. If you’re running a well-run NZ business and selling has been on your radar, this is the moment to put it in front of Australian buyers.
What we’re seeing
Finn Business Sales is Australia’s largest business sales network, with a team of around 100 people selling businesses across every state, and we receive more than 1,500 new buyer enquiries every month. The pattern in our NZ-focused enquiries has shifted over the past year. We’re hearing from a growing number of Australian buyers looking for mid-sized NZ businesses as the foundation for a Tasman expansion strategy. They want a proven business model in a market they see as stable, then a clear pathway to roll it out across a larger addressable market. The buyers asking about NZ assets now represent a meaningful share of that enquiry volume. They’re serious, they’re patient, and they’re looking for the right fit.
Why NZ looks attractive right now
A recent ChannelLife piece on ANZ small business growth plans for 2026 pointed to the same shift we’re seeing on the buyer side. The story flagged that New Zealand small businesses are sharpening their focus on growth quality, customer service and productivity, exactly the qualities that translate well across the Tasman. Both countries are tightening focus on AI adoption and operational efficiency, so a business performing well in New Zealand has a clear pathway to do the same in Australia, just with more room to grow. The same piece also called out that staffing remains a barrier to growth on both sides of the Tasman, which is part of why mid-sized NZ businesses with the right team in place are looking attractive to Australian acquirers. The regulatory environment feels predictable, the customer base is English-speaking and accessible, and the typical NZ business is lean and operationally sound.
What this means if selling is on your radar
- If you’ve been thinking about selling, advertise in Australia. The market is five times bigger than New Zealand, and a lot of the buyer interest coming through is from Australian acquirers looking for that foothold.
- Make sure your financial controls and operational systems are documented and transferable. Buyers will want to see that your success isn’t built around one person.
- Make sure you’ve got enough staff running most of the operations and customer interactions day to day. It’s OK if you’re involved in the business most days, but a buyer will want to see it’s not all centred on you.
Would you like your business in front of Australian buyers looking for that Tasman foothold? And do you know what your business looks like to a buyer stepping across from Sydney or Melbourne?
