What Is Your Business Really Worth?

Business
Resource: Articles

Many business owners know their sales, margins and costs well but don’t know what a buyer would actually pay for the business. A business is often an owner’s biggest asset. Getting a clear picture of its value early, especially if you plan to sell in the next few years, gives you time to prepare and improve the price you end up getting.

One of the most common questions we hear from business owners is simple: “What is my business actually worth?”

It is an important question, particularly if selling your business is something you are considering in the next few years.

Over the years, we have worked with plenty of successful business owners who know their sales, margins and expenses inside out, but don’t have a clear understanding of what a buyer would actually be prepared to pay for their business.

For many owners, their business is one of their largest assets. Understanding its value early gives you time to prepare and potentially improve the result you achieve when you eventually sell.

Profit Is Only Part of the Story

Profitability is obviously an important part of valuing a business, but it isn’t the whole story.

Buyers consider the overall business. They look at the consistency of earnings, how dependent the business is on the owner, the strength of the team, systems and processes, growth opportunities, industry conditions and the risks involved.

This means two businesses producing similar profits can have very different values.

Something we see regularly is business owners focusing heavily on a profit multiple without considering what sits behind that multiple. A business with strong systems, reliable staff and limited owner involvement may be much more attractive to a buyer than one where everything depends on the owner.

That is why a proper valuation needs to look beyond the numbers.

Don’t Wait Until You’re Ready to Sell

If you’re considering selling your business in the next few years, one of the best things you can do is understand what a buyer may be prepared to pay for it today.

If that figure isn’t where you want it to be, you still have time to do something about it.

One of the harder conversations we sometimes have with business owners is when the price they need or expect for their business doesn’t line up with what the market is likely to pay. Finding that out a few years before selling gives you options. Finding it out once you’ve decided to sell doesn’t.

You might need to improve profitability, reduce the business’s reliance on you, strengthen your management team, document your systems or create more consistent financial results.

These aren’t necessarily things you can fix a month before going to market.

A valuation gives you a starting point and can help identify areas that may be holding your business’s value back.

What Will a Buyer Actually Pay?

This is where real-world business sales experience becomes particularly important.

Ultimately, there can be a difference between what an owner believes their business is worth and what buyers in the current market are prepared to pay.

At The Finn Group, we deal with business owners and buyers across Australia every day. This gives us practical insight into what buyers are looking for, the risks they focus on and what can make one business more attractive than another.

Finn Business Valuations combines recognised valuation methodology with financial analysis, market comparables, industry benchmarks and real business sales experience. The goal is to provide owners with a practical understanding of how the market is likely to assess their business.

Know Where You Stand Before You Sell

Even if selling is still a few years away, knowing what your business is worth today puts you in a stronger position.

You can set realistic expectations, identify what may be holding your value back and work on the areas that could make the business more attractive to buyers.

If you’ve spent years building your business, don’t wait until you’re ready to sell to find out what it’s worth.

Understand what your business is worth today and prepare for a stronger sale with Finn Business Valuations.
